On my way out of Shannon’s cottage, my eyes fell on a little paisley book called “A Friend is Someone Who Likes You.” It sat there on a doily, illuminated by a stained-glass lamp. Oh. Said Shannon, as she saw my gaze, “this is a children’s book…” and she smoothed her milk-soft hands over the green paisley, hiding then revealing the picture of two girls picnicking under a green canopy of one great tree, their heads enormous and their body nearly sticks.  “It’s called, ‘A Friend is Someone Who Likes You,’” she said, and smiled, despite her sad eyes.

“I’ll read it to you,” she said. She shoed me toward her blue velvet love-seat, “sit down.” I unburdened myself from my coat and pack and curled in. She pinned up her cascades of auburn hair, then leaned forward, and even showed the pictures.
